If you need to take an existing page down from your live site, but you want to keep the page in Cascade in case you ned to reinstate it later, follow these steps:

  1. Right click the page you want to hide and select "Unpublish" to remove it from the live site. Then click "Submit".
  2. Click "Edit" on the page you're trying to hide
  3. Make sure "No" is selected for "Include in Navigation". This will remove the page from your navigation.
Note: If you stop here, people can still access your page if they know the exact URL
  4. At the top of the popup, select the 'Configure’ tab. Un-check the ‘Include when publishing’ option. This prevents the page from getting published if/when you do a full-site publish. This is an important step since CMU site administrators may occasionally need to publish the entire CMU website. If this option is checked, your page will get published again.
  5. Click Save & Preview
  6. Click Submit
  7. If you try to publish the page at this point, you will get an error
Note: Your page is still accessible in Cascade.

  8. Publish your entire site (if you need the page removed from your navigation). Adding, removing or renaming items in your site's menu require a full site publish, even when you're trying to hide a page. This is because we need to tell all pages on your site to update the navigation.
Note: this is why it's important to un-check "Include when publishing" so you don't re-publish the page you just unpublished.

When you're ready to make your page live again:

  1. Edit the page
  2. Go to "Configure" and check "Include when publishing"
  3. Select "Yes" on "Include in Navigation (if you need the page listed in your navigation)
  4. Preview, Submit and Publish the page
  5. Publish your entire site (if you need the page listed in your navigation)
