When adding images to your website, take into consideration the possibility that some of your users may be blind, color-blind, or have a disability that inhibits them from interacting with your image in a traditional way.

Find inaccessible images in Siteimprove:

Siteimprove can help you find images on your site that don't follow accessibility standards. The most common warning related to image accessibility is as follows: "Image with no alt attribute". This means your image is not using "text alternatives". Simply review the list of images without an "alt" attribute in Siteimprove and use the methods below to fix the issue.

How to make your images more accessible:

There are a few common methods available to help make your images more accessible.

  • Use text alternatives (more info below)
  • Avoid using images with text inside the image. Use actual text wherever possible.
  • Ensure your images have acceptable contrast for users with weak eyesight or color blindness

Implementing Text Alternatives within Cascade:

When adding an image in Cascade, you will see the option to add an "Image Description". Inserting text into this field generates what is called alternate text within the HTML code for the image. This text is used by screen readers to help visually-impaired users understand your non-text content.

If your image doesn't add value to the content, and is simply there for decorative purposes, you can skip this step and mark your image as "Decorative".
