Inserting a new link

  1. Locate the page to be edited.
  2. Edit the page by clicking the edit button in the top left or right-clicking on the page and selecting 'Edit'.
  3. In your content area, highlight the text you would like to link. (If you are editing an existing link, see below)
  4. Click the 'Insert/edit link' icon  in your toolbar.
  5. Fill out the popup with your link's information.
    • Link source- where is your link destination located
      • Internal - Check this option if the link is a page on your site that you have access to (it must be something you have rights to edit).
      • External - Check this options if you are linking to a site outside of CMU, to a CMU page you don't have access to or creating an email hyperlink (instructions for email hyperlink below). For example, if you want to link to the CMU home page you will need to use the external link option even though it is on our main website.
    • Link
      • If you are creating an internal link, the file chooser option will appear. Click on this button to locate and select the file or page you are linking to. (Using the File Chooser)
      • If you are creating an external link, a text box will appear for you to type the URL. IMPORTANT: Make sure that you keep 'http://' at the beginning of the URL, if you do not the link will be broken.
    • Anchor - If you are linking to an anchor on a page, include that here.
    • Text to display - This is the text that will be hyperlinked. It will default to the text you highlighted in step 2 but you can change it here if you need to.
    • Title - This field can be skipped, it will be trumped by the title of the page or file you are linking to.
    • Target - If you are linking to a page in your site, this can be left as 'None'. If you are linking to an external website or a PDF, this field should be set to 'New window' (that way if a user closes the new link they are still on our website).
    • Class - For a normal text link, this can be left as 'None'. If you would like the link to appear as a button, set this field to 'button-link'. The 'button-link' option should be used sparingly on a page and never in the middle of a paragraph. The difference between the two options is shown below.
  6. When you are finished, click 'Ok'.

Creating an email link

If you would like to hyperlink an email address and have it create an email message when clicked, follow the steps above and use these two settings in the link information window.

  • Set the Link source to 'External'.
  • In the Link field, type 'mailto:' (don't include apostrophes) and then the full email address; don't use spaces.

Editing a link

Making a change to an existing link is similar to creating the link.

  1. Place your cursor anywhere in link that needs to be edited (I don't recommend highlight the whole thing).
  2. Click the 'Insert/edit link' icon  in your toolbar.
  3. Make the necessary changes then click 'ok'.

Removing a link

To remove a link from your page:

  1. Place your cursor anywhere in link that needs to be removed (I don't recommend highlight the whole thing).
  2. Click the 'Remove link' icon  in your toolbar.
  3. You can then delete the text if you no longer need it.

An alternative way is to simply highlight the hyperlinked text on your page and delete it. I don't recommend this process because it will sometimes leave a hyperlink in the background code, the steps outlined above will remove it fully.
